SUMMERNATS
20 Summernats

If
there was one thing that stood out at this year's Summernats, it was crowd behavior.
In my opinion this was the best behaved crowd I've ever seen at Summernats, and
I've been to most of them. I didn't witness a single display of hostility. It
was an absolute pleasure to photograph. Everyone was in party mode, not aggro
mode.
This
year saw drag racing superstar, Victor Bray make a welcome return to Summernats
on behalf of Castrol Edge and was available for signing autographs for the fans. The
Army was back sporting a new camouflage paint job on the Armygeddon six wheel
drive burnout truck. Also on display for the first time to the Australian public
was their Abrams Tank. Weighing in at over 60 tonnes of metal and firepower, the
Abrams Tank is the newest addition to our defense force.
Darwin's
Mad Ron is best known for his 5000hp Rolls Royce Viper jet engine powered drag
bike. He has now added a new toy to the collection, a 1942 Blitz Army Truck with
a similar power plant, and yes it's road registered!. Ron lit up the night sky
during Saturday night's entertainment with both vehicles. He also made several
appearances on the burnout pad on Sunday. Last
year's Summernats saw the first 'modified' army personnel carrier complete with
mirror finish paint job and full custom interior. Summernats 20 saw the second,
this time a black one.
Both
the Burnout Masters on Friday and the Burnout Competition on Sunday kept fire
officials and camera crews on their toes as several of the big horsepower cars
transformed into flame throwers. Gary Myers brought the crowd to it's feet as
he ripped one tyre completely off the rim early in the game. Intent on giving
his fans what they paid for, Myers kept going as he managed to weave his way around
the obstacle as it laid in the middle of the donut pad. Possibly
the most unusual vehicles ever to hit Summernats were the rock crawling buggies.
These crazy vehicles have been described as a cross between a 4WD and a praying
mantas. They are quite literally metal contortionists on wheels. These high powered,
high tech, all wheel drive, all wheel steering machines will climb just about
anything.
The
Top 60 offered up the cream of Australia's best show cars as usual. Ditch Jones
certainly impressed the punters with his mind blowing HR Holden ute. This is one
car that has to be seen to be believed. The workmanship and engineering is
